Shut The Hell Up With Your “FACEBOOK IS SHUTTING DOWN” Crap!
I’m sure most of you have Facebook. Everyone uses Facebook now, from college kids who slack in school (ie. moi) and/or have no non-internet life, to immature adolescent kids who just want to jump on the latest bandwagon, to older folks wanting to reconnect with past friends (or who want to act like they’re young again and are pretty creepy doing so).
That said, I’m also 100% positive that since around July, you’ve come across at least one Facebook group guilty of “the sky is falling!!!” behaviour. I’m talking about the lawsuit against Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of the best social networking site in the world (it’s gone a lot downhill, but it still trumps MySpace in every aspect), by a group of coders who claimed that Zuckerberg stole their idea for such a website. It was widely reported in the media for a very short bit, but it sent ripples - no make that tsunamis - of panic in the Facebook community. Aka, the stupid, gullible ones.
Seriously, whoever thinks that Facebook would shut down because of a lawsuit (not to mention an unfounded one) is a giant tool. Like the-rusty-tool-you-chuck-somewhere-in-your-shed-because-it’s-a-useless-piece-of-crap kind of tool. Firstly, assuming Zuckerberg lost ownership or financial control of Facebook, why the hell would it shut down?! This is a billion-dollar venture we’re talking. In English, that means that everyone has an interest to keep it going, no matter whose hands it’s in.
And even if Facebook does shut down, what are its members going to do about it? Oooh, petition, that’s certainly going to change minds! (Note: sarcasm.) Yes, those who would shut the site down will seriously consider the opinions of members, because they’re certainly not at all biased, being part of the site. (Okay, end sarcasm now.)
But it doesn’t seem like many people are smart enough to think that way, because a “petition to keep Facebook” group is the largest group in the entire site, with over one-and-a-half million members, and still unfortunately going strong. That means there are STILL idiots who are screaming about e-Judgement Day. A simple search of “save facebook” provides even well over a dozen (and I only looked at the first five or so pages of results) groups for that idiot cause (which really isn’t a cause, because there’s not an issue to begin with) that have more than a thousand members. Thus, based on guesstimates (I love this word), there are about two to three million people who deserve about the same amount of respect as people who consider dihydrogen monoxide a serious environmental issue on this planet.
So if you’re reading this, please do us all a favour and leave those inane groups (if you were gullible to join in the first place), and tell all your friends that they’re being stupid, too.
By the way, one of the main reasons why I’m frustrated about this (other than the fact that I see these groups EVERYWHERE and I get countless invites to these dumb groups) is that The Largest Facebook Group ever can’t live up to its title anymore. Adding insult to injury, this aforementioned group was trumped by a group that’s more ridiculous than Shoot ‘Em Up, starring Clive Owen. (Whether you liked the movie or not, you have to admit that it was ridiculous.)
Check out the FOLLOW-UP to this article!

I wish Facebook would shut down. My teenager just signed up and now all he does is try to get more and more friends to join. It is getting ridiculous. It is definitely a band wagon jumping thing right now until the next new social media site is created.

In today’s world, the youth are all about being social whores, if you excuse mon Français, communicating and connected 24/7.
Facebook in its prime was college-exclusive, and I really wish they’d smarten up and revert it back to that way. But it’ll never happen.

i think face book should be shut down for the simple fact that i know countless ppl who have had their relationships ruined by it, and yes they all know how to block ppl but ppl have friends and its not hard to start a rumour on facebook, with absolutly no security you can pretty much say or post anything you want!!! and to those who want it to stay, good luck and you will know what it feels like to have someone ruin your relationship soon!!!
ruined relations...

Er, um - someone said above they wished Facebook would go back to being a network just for colleges. No, no, NO! That’s Connectu, and the fact Facebook is for all ages puts it way ahead of Connectu. It hasn’t and won’t “ruin” any of my relationships because I communicate with my family and friends more on Facebook than I ever did through email or messenger, and it’s not like I didn’t try to before Facebook. But everyone in my family, and several friends all gravitated to Facebook, so I joined, and now I find I’m keeping in touch so much more with these people, and learning something more about them and the little things going on in their daily lives. And that sure beats the heck out of getting the occasional email from a friend and being disappointed because they sent just another stupid chain letter. I don’t know why they’re more interactive and communicating on Facebook, but it’s great, and works for me so far.
I’ve seen a lot of other relationships ruined online long before Facebook was online.
Now, to the poster on this blog - excellent post! I honestly don’t know why people believe every hair-brained chain letter they get, and why they pass them on in the first place. There seem to be a few trends on Facebook that are incredibly annoying. One is the spreading of the Facebook shut-down hoax, another is the hoax about the hotmail hacker that wants to friend everybody, and another trend is so many lame groups want to be the biggest group on Facebook at a million members and set a world record. *Rolling eyes* Please. As if…
So, great post, I bookmarked it.

Merci beaucoup!
Btw, it was me, the poster on this blog, who said that Facebook should stay college-only ;). Reasons are that there are too many kids, random creeps, and larger demographic (see: baby-boomers, sorry but it’s true) who are creating and posting inane things and groups, while filling up their profile to the max with a million different applications. But that being said, yes, I will admit to Facebook opening up having many advantages as well.

Facebook is a blight. It encourages underage drinking among other wonderful things. There’s not a single redeeming quality and I hope it fades into the sunset like Ask Jeeves.
To the author of this BLOG entry: eat crap and die you waste of skin.

Thanks for that insightful comment, Tom. I don’t know if you’re some internet-hater (what was wrong with Ask Jeeves? Nothing!) or just some guy angry that he doesn’t have many friends on Facebook, but it doesn’t give you any right to insult me, albeit a lame insult.
Facebook doesn’t “encourage” underage drinking…it happens whether such pictures are posted or not. The only things that Facebook truly encourages are increased socialization and procrastination.

to say facebook should be shut down is “SELFISH”. and if i didn’t no better i would say whoever says things in that manner is a little to self involved . the problem is there are ALOT more people then yourself in this world, and has helped people with comm skills and connect with long lost friends, just for those two reasons, people should think of all the good it has done for millions , not the harm it may have coused to a minute few, so plz for the love of respect for others. keep your ignorent meaningless”shut down facebook” thoughts to yourself, for everytime you mention you want facebook shut down. you just made that many more people dislike you.

Err, I’m one of those “older folks wanting to reconnect with past friends”. And I have to say: so freaking what? I’ve reconnected with many friends I hadn’t talked to in a donkey’s year. And what’s wrong with that? It’s fantastic. I think you have a case of ageism, my friend. The real irony is, it’s people who are ageist who have the hardest time adjusting to one of the most inevitable things in life (besides death and taxes).
